Apple has internally banned its employees from using generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT and GitHub's Copilot, according to a memo obtained by The Wall Street Journal. The decision stems from concerns over these tools collecting sensitive information while being used for work. ChatGPT, a Microsoft-supported platform, sends data back to developers for AI model improvements. Similarly, GitHub's Copilot, owned by Microsoft, is designed to help developers with code completion and automation.
Companies like JPMorgan Chase, Verizon, and Amazon have exhibited similar concerns regarding third-party generative AI tools, leading to usage restrictions or adoption of internal AI solutions. Apple, known for its focus on privacy and security, has reportedly been working on its own AI model. Their ongoing AI project, led by John Giannandrea, is working to improve Siri by integrating generative natural language capabilities. The technology, codenamed 'Bobcat,' is currently being tested, but there is no timeline for public availability.
