Starting this fall, Harvard University is set to use an AI instructor to teach CS50, a well-known coding introductory course. Professor David Malan, who runs CS50, says that employing an AI teacher is merely an evolution of the tradition of integrating new software into the course. He hopes to achieve a 1:1 teacher-student ratio via AI, providing round-the-clock educational support with a personalized learning style to each student. However, this endeavor raises questions regarding the reliability of current AI models, such as GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, in delivering structurally-sound code consistently. Malan acknowledges that the first iterations of AI programs may sometimes fail or even err but reiterates that the goal is to free up the course staff's time for more one-on-one interaction with students.
