Steganography, the art of hiding data in digital media, has been persevering for centuries, dating back to ancient times. The new technology is introducing cryptographic schemes for clandestine writing. This breakthrough discovery connects mathematical frameworks supporting communication – termed information theory – and the real-world applications of steganography. Although the two fields rarely intersect, the newly designed algorithms amalgamate them by attaining long-standing theoretical benchmarks for security, suggesting operative uses of hidden messages in machine-generated content. Steganography has thrived through the ages, proving beneficial for both benign and malicious purposes. Encrypted messages have found use in everything from war strategies to potential counter-measures against information leaks. Provisions of the 21st-century tech have further fostered their use with tactics such as embedding text in manipulated images. However, perfect secrecy in steganography remains elusive due to complications of human-generated text. Yet, researchers have established a promising way forward, stipulating that machine-generated text, unlike human output, may potentially facilitate perfectly secure steganography.
