OpenAI's recent announcement has revealed that Sam Altman has been fired as the company's CEO. The board's decision to discontinue Altman's services was a result of his alleged lack of candor in his communications, which impeded the board's functionalities. As a consequence, the board lost confidence in Altman's ability to lead the company. Altman's immediate replacement will be OpenAI's chief technology officer, Mira Murati, who would hold an interim CEO position. The company plans to conduct a search for a permanent successor.
The sudden firing of Altman has also seen the stepping down of co-founder and president Greg Brockman as the board chairman, although he remains part of the company. The announcement was a surprise to the employees of OpenAI, and many received the information when it was made public. Altman, a co-founder of OpenAI, started alongside Elon Musk, who left the company in 2018. Microsoft, an investor of OpenAI, continues its long-term partnership with the AI company. The remaining board members are chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner.
