A recent turmoil unfolding at OpenAI has escalated as around 91% of its workforce, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever, asked the sitting board to resign. This majority of employees are threatening to quit if the board does not comply. According to the letter signed by twelve high-ranking employees, they responded to the board's concerns following CEO Sam Altman's firing and attempted to negotiate for stabilization. Nevertheless, they found the board's reluctance to provide facts or written evidence regarding its allegations disturbing. In their written statement, the employee group expressed that the board failed to carry out its duties and has been operating in bad faith. It highlighted contempt for the actions following the CEO's removal, where the interim CEO Mira Murati was also replaced, against the company's best interests. Revealingly, they asserted a lack of trust in the current board, blaming its incompetence, lack of judgment, and disregard for the company's mission. Lastly, they issued their ultimatum: unless the current board members resign and appoint two new lead independent directors, they will resign from OpenAI. In the wake of this saga, co-founder Ilya Sutskever demonstrated regret for his role in the board's actions. Although he led the firing process for Altman, he later reconsidered following internal developments at the company. Meanwhile, Microsoft emerged as a likely beneficiary of this upheaval, with an apparent guarantee to the employees of OpenAI positions at their newly formed subsidiary.
